Turbine Forum 2021

Advanced Coatings and Materials for Turbine Components
September 22 – 24, 2021, Nice / France

This international conference will focus on the latest needs for modern turbine materials and coatings in the hot gas section. As turbine temperature capability has increased rapidly due to performance requirements, coatings have become an indispensable tool for protection against oxidation, high temperature corrosion and thermal fluxes. Coatings have to be adjusted to novel chemical compositions and new high temperature structural materials like CMCs.

The Turbine Forum 2020 will highlight developments in materials, coatings with outstanding properties and new technologies with improved equipment performance. In five working sessions international experts will present original papers in the following areas:

  • New Materials with High Potential
  • Complex Bond Coats for TBCs
  • TBCs incl. New Ceramics and Low Conductivity Systems
  • Environmental Barrier Coatings for Ceramic Matrix Composites

New materials and disruptive manufacturing methods are changing the turbine world. Highly sophisticated coating processes, combined with better understanding and life modelling of coating performance lead to a high standard of coating performance. New coating compositions will initiate the next generation of coatings with respect to process efficiency, cost and coating properties.

The Turbine Forum 2020 links science and practical experience in the field of high temperature materials, coatings and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to talk to and meet OEM and scientific experts. State of the art technologies will be discussed and potential road maps for the future will be exhibited. Networking with the global players in the business, with presidents, chief engineers, marketing and technical managers will enable you to find the critical and cutting edge information.

There will be sufficient time left for general audience discussions during the forum, as well as in the breaks, during the lunches and at the conference dinner. The comfortable location near to the Côte d‘Azur beach together with excellent French cuisine will provide the positive mood for a successful event.

Updated program will be published soon!

Pre-Conference Workshops

September 29, 2020, Nice / France

Workshop 1: Additive manufacturing

A „game changer“ in the gas turbine industry

Full day workshop, Tuesday, 29st September, 2020
9.00 – 17.00 o’clock, including lunch
650 Euros per person

Lecturer: Stephane Abed, Poly-Shape, France

Deadline for registration: 31st August, 2020
Minimum number of participants: 5

In case the minimum number of participants will not be reached, the workshop fee will be refunded completely.

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing is being hailed as the way to eliminate labour-intensive manufacturing and assembly processes while avoiding structural weaknesses. The purpose of this workshop is to understand the potential and the best ways to use the technology in the gas turbine industry.
The workshop will provide an overview of metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes – evolution as well as state of the art (advantages, limitations and applications).

Dr. Stéphane Abed is the founder and CEO of Poly-Shape Company. Stéphane has graduated a PhD in Materials Science in 2000 (Paris). He had been working at the French Nuclear Center and join Fraunhofer ILT Institute tor work in the Metal Additive Manufacturing Research Team in 2002 before founding Poly-Shape in 2007.

Workshop 2: Environmental Properties of Alloys and Coatings at High Temperature

Half day workshop, Tuesday, 29st September, 2020
9.00 – 12.30 o’clock, 300 Euros per person

Lecturer: Norbert Czech, NCConsulting, Germany

Deadline for registration: 31st August, 2020
Minimum number of participants: 5

In case the minimum number of participants will not be reached, the workshop fee will be refunded completely.

Aero and industrial gas turbines are subjects of environmental degradation e.g. oxidation, hot corrosion and erosion. Depending on the operational and site conditions different mechanisms of attack can cause severe reductions in component life. Alloys and both metallic and ceramic coatings exhibit specific response to these mechanisms which will be discussed in depth during the workshop. Participants will learn about strategies to avoid or reduce and control the impact of degradations on the performance of the most important turbine components.

Dr. Norbert Czech has had many years of experience in the field of hot corrosion, coating development and repair of gas turbine components. He used to work for a major OEM until he became an independent consultant. At present his main interests are failure analysis, R&D guidance and market analysis.

Workshop 3: Failure Analysis of Thermally Stressed Components

Half day workshop, Tuesday, 29st September, 2020
16.00 – 19.30 o’clock, 300 Euros per person

Lecturer: Manfred Roth, Switzerland

Deadline for registration: 31st August, 2020
Minimum number of participants: 5

In case the minimum number of participants will not be reached, the workshop fee will be refunded completely.

Based on the fundamentals of the origination and appearance of fractures the influences of material, design and manufacture on failure mechanisms are discussed. Special interest is devoted to detrimental operative conditions like mechanical, thermal and corrosive overload; especially the combination of mechanical load (static, HCF, LCF) and corrosive attack can be the reason of a drastic drop in life-time. This is demonstrated by case studies from different fields (gas and steam turbines, aircrafts, machinery, etc). Experimental methods like fractography, metallography and microanalysis will be applied to evaluate the cause of the failure.

Prof. Dr. Manfred Roth was employed as a laboratory head with the Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Testing and Research. He has more than 25 years of experience in failure analysis of metallic components. He was also responsible for different research projects covering coating and repair technology of turbine components and advanced joining processes.
