Turbine Forum 2020
Advanced Coatings and Materials for Turbine Components
April 22 – 24, 2020, Nice / France
This international conference will focus on the latest needs for modern turbine materials and coatings in the hot gas section. As turbine temperature capability has increased rapidly due to performance requirements, coatings have become an indispensable tool for protection against oxidation, high temperature corrosion and thermal fluxes. Coatings have to be adjusted to novel chemical compositions and new high temperature structural materials like CMCs and substrates produced by additive manufacturing.
The Turbine Forum 2020 will highlight developments in materials, coatings with outstanding properties and new technologies with improved equipment performance. In five working sessions international experts will present original papers in the following areas:
- Additive Manufacturing of Advanced Turbine Components
- Complex Bond Coats for TBCs
- TBCs incl. New Ceramics and Low Conductivity Systems
- Environmental Barrier Coatings for Ceramic Matrix Composites
New materials and disruptive manufacturing methods are changing the turbine world. Highly sophisticated coating processes, combined with better understanding and life modelling of coating performance lead to a high standard of coating performance. New coating compositions will initiate the next generation of coatings with respect to process efficiency, cost and coating properties.
The Turbine Forum 2020 links science and practical experience in the field of high temperature coatings and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to talk to and meet the experts in the field of materials, developments and processes. State of the art technologies will be discussed and potential road maps for the future will be exhibited. Networking with the global players in the business, with presidents, chief engineers, marketing and technical managers will enable you to find the critical and cutting edge information.
There will be sufficient time left for general audience discussions during the forum, as well as in the breaks, during the lunches and at the conference dinner. The comfortable location near to the Côte d‘Azur beach together with excellent French cuisine will provide the positive mood for a successful event.

Workshop 1: Additive manufacturing
A „game changer“ in the gas turbine industry
3D printing is being hailed as the way to eliminate labour-intensive manufacturing and assembly processes while avoiding structural weaknesses. The purpose of this workshop is to understand the potential and the best ways to use the technology in the gas turbine industry.
The technique of additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has evolved in a matter of years from producing plastic novelties to making medical implants, concrete houses and parts for jet engines. A completely new world of design, materials and manufacturing is opening up, leading to talk of another industrial revolution. AM involves making a three-dimensional object by adding ultra-thin layers of material one by one, following a design expressed in digital format. This is the opposite of most conventional manufacturing, where excess material is cut away, resulting in significant waste.
Also, because AM consists of “growing” the part in a single piece from the bottom up, it avoids the need to manufacture several components and assemble them into a larger structure. This, in turn, removes the need for welding and machining and eliminates potential weak points at interfaces, while also reducing weight. At the same time, engineers can design components with complex internal structures that would be very expensive, if not impossible, to make otherwise. One way to do this is through innovative design as the ability to include internal channels; make lightweight structures; and integrate functions.
Another significant benefit is that AM jumps straight from the design phase to production. This makes it far quicker and easier to build prototypes and speed up innovation. Another key area is developing new materials within AM. It is conceivable, for example, to develop lighter, stronger materials for blades and other components. AM is already apply to rapid prototyping and printing spare parts for industrial gas turbines.
This workshop will provide an overview of metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes – evolution as well as state of the art (advantages, limitations and applications). Furthermore, attendees will learn about alloys presently available for AM and about trends in the future. A major focus is also on disruptive design strategies and AM quality management strategies. Industrial applications in turbine markets will also be discussed by case studies pointing out opportunities and limitation of AM in this field.
Dr. Stéphane ABED is the founder and CEO of Poly-Shape company. Stephane has graduated a PhD in Material Science in 2000 from University of Paris P. and M. Curie. After this, he had been working at the French Nuclear Center and join Fraunhofer ILT Institute to work in the Metal Additive Manufacturing research team in 2002 before founding Poly-Shape in 2007.
Poly-Shape is a French innovative SME in additive manufacturing expert in design and production by Metal Additive Manufacturing. This leading company in Europe now employs 200 people and uses more than 30 metal machines, 3 different AM technologies, to produce parts for energy, automotive or aerospace markets.
Workshop 2: Further information will follow shortly.
